Name Released In Fatal ATV Vs. Deer Crash In Polk County

POLK COUNTY — Polk County Sheriff Brent Waak has released the name of the man who died in a fatal ATV crash on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

The operator of the ATV was John Smith, 70, of rural Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, according to the sheriff.

The crash occurred at 3:34 p.m. on 150th Avenue, east of County H in the town of Apple River. First responders discovered Smith deceased at the scene after his ATV struck a deer while traveling eastbound.

Authorities confirmed Smith was not wearing a helmet and suffered trauma from the collision.

The Wisconsin DNR and Polk County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the crash. Assisting were Apple River Fire, Northwestern Municipal EMS, and the Polk County Medical Examiner.

Sheriff Waak urges ATV riders to wear helmets and exercise caution while traveling on local roads.
