Contractor Working To Make US 63 As Accessible As Possible For Upcoming Events

SPOONER, WI -- For the next few weeks, construction on US 63 (River Street) from Greenwood Avenue to Poplar Street in the Washburn County city of Spooner will be light as the contractor works to make the area as accessible as possible for the Fourth of July weekend and Spooner Rodeo.

For safety and traffic reasons, traffic isn’t allowed to go north on US 63 at the signals at WIS 70, but US 63 is accessible through side streets and alleys from Vine to Walnut streets. In addition, Walnut Street has been returned to the pre-construction condition for parking.

Construction started March 28 on a project to reconstruct US 63 from WIS 70 to Poplar Street with new pavement, sidewalk, curb and gutter; rebuild the US 63/WIS 70 intersection; and resurface US 63 from Greenwood Avenue to WIS 70. The project also includes installing new utilities, street lighting, pavement marking and signing; upgrading pedestrian curb ramps at the ends of sidewalks; and converting US 63 from Greenwood Avenue to Poplar Street to a three-lane road, with one lane for traffic in each direction and a two-way left-turn lane in the center to improve safety and reduce overall corridor travel times.

Underground utility work has been completed. The next phase of concrete will begin as early as Wednesday, July 13, which will complete the concrete paving portion of the project. For two weeks during and after the concrete paving operations, all side roads and alleys north of Walnut Street will be closed to all traffic.

US 63 is expected to be fully accessible by Sept. 30, and all construction is scheduled for completion in mid-October.
