In Memory of Winnifred Walters


January 24, 1928 - May 30, 2019

Winnifred Walters, 91, passed away peacefully on May 30th at Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, Wisconsin. 

Winnie was born in Bloomer and raised in nearby Cooks Valley, WI.  On May 16, 1955 she married Fred Walters of Ladysmith.   They both worked FT while raising a family in Eau Claire and later Menomonie.   She made time for church, and school activities, as well as the many hobbies she enjoyed such as; cooking, canning, and crafts to name but a few.

Having been longtime visitors to her father’s cabin outside of Minong; in 1982 they retired to Minong to stay.  She had worked for many years as a Case Aide in the Human Services Dept. in Menomonie WI.   Many people in the Minong area know Winnie from her work at the Corner Store, and activities at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Minong Senior Center. 

Survivors include; her son, Kirk of Minong, as well as, her brother, Thomas (Tucker) Schwartz, and Sister Virginia.   She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and the families of Fred’s brother, Walt of Neenah Wi, and his step-brother, Craig Smith of Gordon.

She was preceded in death by; her husband, Fred, her son, Karl, and her parents, Andrew and Dorothy Schwartz.  Also preceding Winnie were; her younger sisters, Darlene Strand, Collette Wofford, and Roma Schwartz.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 10, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minong, with Fr. James Kinney officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Minong, WI.
