In Memory of Virgil F. Sullivan
Virgil Frank Sullivan, age 83, a resident of Grantsburg, WI., passed away on December 4, 2023 at Burnett Medical Continuing Care Center. Virgil was born on October 2, 1940 to parents Frank and Doris (Johnson) Sullivan and was raised in Grantsburg.
In 1957 he and some of his friends joined the Navy National Guards. In the late fall of 1959, he worked at Sears in Minneapolis, where he met Yvonne on a blind date. In February he went on active in Jacksonville, FL as a photographer. He returned home and married Yvonne on August 6, 1960, at Chokio, MN. In April of 1961, he went on a 6-month tour stationed just south of Mount Etna, Sicily. He got released in February of 1962. He returned to the guards again until the summer of 1963.
In 1963 they moved to southern California. Virgil drove truck for Coca-Cola for 5 years. He then worked for Standard Oil for a year. They then moved to San Jose and Virgil sold insurance for State Farm retiring after 25 years with them. In 1996 they moved to Grantsburg, WI.
They had several RV’s and traveled across all 50 states and all across Canada. Virgil and Yvonne took a 7-week RV trip to Alaska. They also took a cruise on the Baltic Sea and went to 7 countries in 10 days.
Virgil was a life member of the American Legion Post 185. He was also in the Honor Guard for several years.
His favorite hobby was buying and selling guns. He was in several gun clubs and on trap and skeet teams.
Virgil is preceded in death by his mother, Doris Marek; stepfather, Joe Marek; son, Terry Jon; brothers and sister in-laws, Duke and Jean Asmus and Gordon Lange.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Yvonne; son Jeffrey and his wife Jen; grandchildren, Brian and April; great-granddaughters, Lily Mae, Caroline and Charlotte; in-laws, Marilyn and LeRoy Read, Darrell and Judy Lange, David and Debbie Lange, and Gilda Lange; along with other family members and many friends.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Falun, WI with Pastor Jay Ticknor officiating with Military Honors following.
Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Funeral Home, Grantsburg.
