In Memory of Tucker M. McCumber
Tucker Marcel McCumber, 32, passed away on October 15, 2023, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Tucker was born in Spooner, Wisconsin, on January 18, 1991, to Bruce and Gayle McCumber. From day one, his energy and determination was apparent, and he tackled every obstacle in life head-on. He discovered computers at age five, and technology became his life. After graduating from high school in 2009, Tucker obtained an Associate Degree in Information Technology (IT) from Northwoods Technical College in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
As soon as Tucker turned 18, he joined the Shell Lake Fire Department and found his true passion in life, ending his career with the rank of Captain. After working in the IT field for several years, Tucker became a 911 dispatcher for the St. Croix Tribal Police and then for Barron County. Tucker then accepted a position at Washburn County, where he served as both a 911 dispatcher and a Radio Systems Communications Manager, upgrading and maintaining the county-wide emergency radio system. In addition to this and the fire department, he volunteered as an EMS First Responder and provided in-home computer work for people who needed it. His family is incredibly proud of the man he was. Even at the end, he faced everything with integrity and gratitude, putting other people’s needs before his own and always thanking the nurses every time they attended to him.
Tucker was preceded in death by his father, Bruce McCumber; grandfather, Norman Lester; and grandparents, Marcel and Doris McCumber.
He is survived by his mother, Gayle McCumber; brother, Corbin (Nikki) McCumber; sister, Danika (Kumar) McCumber; nephews, Kohen and Cooper; niece, Nevaeh; grandmother, Beverly “Darn” Lester; and aunts, uncles, cousins, and his soulmate Kyley Williams.
He will be deeply missed by his faithful companions, his dog, Cali and his cat, Mr. Kitty (AKA Worm), who kept him company through countless hours of chemotherapy on the couch.
A memorial service will be held at the Spooner Elementary School on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held at the school from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tucker’s memory may be made to support the Shell Lake Fire Department or to other volunteer fire departments.
