In Memory of Sun Cha Kil

May 29, 1943 - April 30, 2022

Sun Cha Kil, 78, of Minneapolis, MN passed away unexpectedly on April 30, 2022.

She was born May 29, 1943 in what is now North Korea.

Sun Cha had a “movie worthy” life. She escaped North Korea as a child during the war to live in South Korea where she had her family. In 1981 she again made a major change and immigrated her family to Turtle Lake, WI to make a new life for herself and her children. In her later years she enjoyed her independence and being a part of the Korean community in Minneapolis MN.

To know Sun Cha is to know someone who was caring and kind. She did everything that she could to make you feel welcomed and loved. She was an excellent cook and was happiest feeding the ones that she loved. She gave unconditional support to her family and friends and could be counted on whenever she was needed. Sun Cha enjoyed traveling to California, Alaska, and, most recently, Seoul, South Korea. Sun Cha was always up for an adventure, whether it was traveling across the country or taking the light rail with a friend for shopping, she was always excited to experience something new. She was a positive person who was out-going and energetic yet had a feisty side to her personality. She was an animal-lover and enjoyed bright colors and beautiful flowers. She enjoyed doing puzzles and watching Korean dramas. Sun Cha worked extremely hard her whole life and there is nothing that she wouldn’t do for you. Even in her later years she enjoyed caring for her family and the people in her community. Sun Cha was such a strong woman: in her early years she survived a war in which she lost many family members, in her middle years she brought four children to the US without knowing the language and raised them to be successful and accomplished, and,in her later years, she survived a pandemic. At the age of 75, Sun Cha earned her US citizenship, a major accomplishment that she had worked passionately to achieve.

Sun Cha is survived by children: Charlie (Joy), Chad (Sachie), Mike (Jenny), and Miae (Karl); grandchildren: Mat, Lena, Ethan, Minnie, Hannah, Andy, and Sam; sister-in-law: Aja; niece: Sandy and many dear friends. Her loss is felt greatly by her family and friends and she will be missed dearly.

There will be a celebration of her life at a later date.
