In Memory of Shirley C. Tiffany


April 17, 1936 - January 16, 2024

Shirley C. Tiffany, age 87, of Hayward, WI passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Water’s Edge Care Center in Hayward.

Shirley Christine was born April 17, 1936, in Cable, WI the daughter of Elmer and Etta (Svendsen) Somerville.

She was raised in Seeley, WI where she attended school through the eighth grade. She then went onto Hayward High School where she would graduate. Shirley continued her education at the University of Wisconsin, Superior where she earned a teaching certificate. She moved to Wausau, WI with her future sister-in-law, Gerry, where she began teaching. Shirley decided to return to college in Superior and she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education. On August 30, 1958, Shirley was joined in marriage to Harold D. Tiffany in Hayward, WI. Shirley and Harold moved to Duluth, MN where Shirley was a teacher. In 1960, Shirley and Harold moved to Hayward, WI and Shirley was a homemaker and substitute teacher raising their two children. Once her children were established in school, Shirley continued her teaching career for the Hayward School District, first as a Kindergarten teacher and later as a fifth-grade teacher. After her years of teaching, Shirly kept tabs on her former students and took great pride in seeing them succeed in the community. Throughout her life Shirley enjoyed taking walks, going to horse shows, downhill skiing, and golfing. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she was active in many bible studies. She was also active with the Red Hat Society, American Cancer Society, Hayward Area Retired Educator Association, and her ladies bridge group.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold; two children, Jim (Karyn) Tiffany of Hayward, Kari Costa of Stillwater, MN; four grandchildren, Kristine (Drew) Anderson, Joey (Hannah Weegman) Costa, Thomas Tiffany, and Maria Costa; brother, Larry (Gerry) Somerville of Hayward; sister, Kathy Bergum of Hayward; sister-in-law, Chris Somerville of Sun City, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Somerville; brother-in-law, Richard Bergum; and niece, Dana Schwartz.

A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at First Lutheran Church in Hayward with Pastor Joel Bacon officiating. A time of gathering with family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in the spring in the Riverside Cemetery in Seeley, WI.
