In Memory of Richard D. Benjamin
Richard “Dick” Donald Benjamin, age 86, of St. Croix, WI passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at St. Croix Hospital.
Dick was born on September 4, to parents, Harvey and Elsie (Parker) Benjamin. He was the third youngest of 11 children. Dick attended Cumberland High School, graduating in the class of 1954. Not long after finishing school, Dick ran into schoolmate, Betty (Scharmer) and from there, the two became inseparable. They were united in marriage September 7, 1957 in Cumberland, WI and through their 65 years of marriage, were blessed with 3 boys.
In 1962, Dick and Betty moved the family to St. Croix where they have continued to live for 60 years. Dick opened his own hardware store, Almelund Hardware. He later sold his business but went on to help his son own and operate their carpet and fire restoration company, Interstate Cleaning.
When Dick wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He often took the kids fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing…anything that involved being outdoors. Dick was a huge animal lover. Him and Betty put up many feeders in their backyard and enjoyed watching birds and other critters come by. After retirement, the two took up traveling together and visited 47 states; their favorite being Alaska, where they would travel on 4 separate occasions. It didn’t matter where they went, they always left having made countless new friends.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; 7 sisters; 2 brothers; several other family members and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; children, Ronald (Kristine), Robert (Suzie), and Richard (Kathy); grandchildren, Justin (Melissa), Eric (Meghan) Pfeifer, Dan, and Hunter Tibor; brother, Thomas (Barb); sister-in-law, Judy Scharmer; many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
