In Memory of Millie M. Cady
Mildred “Millie” Mae Cady, 88, of Cumberland passed away Monday, September 19, 2022, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital from a massive stroke.
She was born May 13, 1934, to Walter and Margaret (Davis) Martin in Cumberland, WI.
Millie grew up in a farming family and told many stories of riding with her father and walking alongside their wagon pulled by work horses on Old Hwy. 48 between their farm and Luck, WI. Her father believed that girls did not work in the barn or fields, so Millie and her younger sister gardened, canned, took care of the home with their mother and learned to embroider, knit and crochet. Their teachers from the various rural schools they attended often boarded with her family. Millie worked in Cumberland during high school and had many stories to tell about the town and Rutabaga Festival when it was set up on Main Street. She ran for Miss Cumberland, played softball in Shell Lake, and sang on the Shell Lake radio station before graduating from High School in Shell Lake, WI. Millie moved to St. Paul, MN after graduation, where she did office work. She also lived in Alaska for six months and in Hawaii for two years. On September 14, 1963, she married Charles Cady, from St. Paul, and they lived there with their two young children until moving back to rural Cumberland in 1969. Charles passed away in 1973, leaving Millie to raise their two children on her own. Millie was a stay-at-home mom, participating in the local Sunshine Club, Homemakers Club & bowling league. She was always hosting large family get-togethers at her home.
After retiring from Nichols Homeshield in Rice Lake, she spent her time gardening, knitting, crocheting, quilting and researching family genealogy. She had also been a member of a local quilt club & her family quilt club. Millie loved spending time with her family and regularly traveled to Montana with her local cousins for her paternal family reunion. She also loved to gift the many mittens, hats, scarves, baby blankets, afghans, doilies & quilts that she made.
Millie is survived by her children, Kelly Cady and Rick Cady and grandson, William Sjolander, all of Cumberland, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. Millie was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her mother and father, Walter and Margaret Martin, stepfather Jack Stucky and her sister, Alice Teich.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, October 1, 2022, at First Lutheran Church in Cumberland with Pastor Timothy Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
