In Memory of Tyrone Mazhakwad Muqsāhkwat


April 29, 1986 - July 20, 2024

Tyrone (Mazahakwad/Muqsāhkwat) "Clear Day" Sean Awonohopay, age 38 of Maple Plain passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Cumberland, WI on April 29, 1986 to Anthony and Jeanne (Bearhart) Awonohopay.

Zhakwad was extremely talented and musically inclined. He was a champion pow-wow lead singer and frequently joined well-known drum groups over the years. Zhakwad made many drum brothers across the country. He also revived the Cumberland Singers. Zhakwad was a track master, creating hip hop music in his personal studio set up and sold tracks to underground artists a few times. He also taught himself how to play the guitar and piano.

Zhakwad was a traditional Big Drum Chief of the Maple Plain Community. He led the singing of the sacred songs and helped preserve the drum teachings for the younger generations. Zhakwad held the First Stick position on the Big Drum for nearly 20 years because of his singing abilities.

In his free time, Zhakwad enjoyed listening to music, fishing with his sons and nephews, driving and detailing classic luxury cars, visiting and laughing with friends, and grilling out.

He leaves behind three sons, Trenton, Tyrone Jr., and Teran Awonohopay; his mother, Jeanne Awonohopay; siblings, Aimee, Amanda, and Anthony Awonohopay Jr.; uncle, Michael Bearhart Sr.; nieces and nephews, Cyrus, Winter, and Parker Awonohopay, and Hysen Powless; as well as many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Tyrone was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Awonohopay Sr.; the love of his life, Courtney Oustigoff, and their baby son; brother, Robert Lemieux III; grandparents, Johnny and Grace Bearhart and Johnson and Frances Awonohopay; and nephew, Remy "Aabinooj" Len Awonohopay.

Traditional Midewin Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Maple Plain Reservation Community Center with Chato Gonzalez & Joey Awonohopay officiating. Interment Maple Plain Reserve Cemetery. Traditional Big Drum services will be held after the funeral.

Pallbearers are Mike Rainey, Freddie Loneeagle, Carlos Merrill, Mike Awonohopay, Joe Montano Sr., and Jason Waukau.

Honorary pallbearers are Crow Bellecourt, Eddie J. Benton, Steven Mallory, Thomas Cain, Ben Notinokey, Darren Shegonee, Delvin Cloud, and Mark Kingbird.

Visitation will begin at 3 PM on Monday, July 22, 2024 at Maple Plain Community Center.
