In Memory of Mary Hable
Mary Anne Hable, nee Pottie, passed away on January 19 at the age of 78.
Mary Anne was born to John and Eleanor Pottie in McHenry, Illinois, and lived on dairy farms there and in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Growing up she enjoyed 4-H, the high school marching band, piano, and tormenting her little brother. After graduating high school she moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she attended business school and later met her husband, Warren. The happy couple married in 1967 and relocated to Virginia where they raised their three daughters and a naughty dog named Alfie. She was a dedicated mom who made opportunities for her daughters in soccer, swimming, tennis, ballet, French lessons, art classes, piano and much more.
Mary Anne moved her family across three continents to support Warren’s career, visiting countries all over the world. She loved to explore the local culture and cuisine, often replicating the region’s recipes in her own kitchen. She thrived wherever she landed, rounding up friends of every nationality and hosting parties, pulling her introverted family along for the ride. She was a tireless community volunteer serving as a local school board member, president of the Parent-Teachers Association, a 4-H judge, a Lioness, an International Women’s Club leader in Greece, an avid soccer mom, a Girl Scout Troop leader and the Lake Country Riders Snowmobile Club treasurer. In spite of her unshakeable fear of water, she leaned over the edge of the pool as a timing-official at hundreds of her daughters’ swim meets. Combining her love of volunteering with her fiercely competitive nature, she screamed herself hoarse for the Freedom Park Swim Team every Saturday in Summers.
After 30 adventurous years, Mary Anne and Warren retired in Siren, Wisconsin and together built their new home on Dunham Lake. Here she raised their fourth and favorite daughter, a yellow lab named Maggie. Mary Anne had an enviable green thumb and became a Master Gardener. Over the years, she enjoyed landscaping their acres of land with fantastic flowerbeds, vegetable gardens and eventually a tree farm. When she ran out of space, she landscaped her daughters’ homes. She spent her summers vacationing in national parks, visiting her daughters, gardening and spoiling her granddaughter, while winters were full of snowmobiling treks and bridge club. Eventually having their fill of cold winters, the couple moved to Prescott, Arizona in 2016, and then recently to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Throughout her life, Mary Anne relished chocolate-covered marshmallows, enjoyed a glass of red wine, and avidly supported the Dorito industry. She had a wonderful sense of humor and could make anyone laugh, no matter the situation. She was a great wife, mother, aunt and friend, outstanding grandmother, and is tremendously missed.
Mary Anne is predeceased by her husband, Warren, and survived by her brother John, daughters Whitney, Stephanie and Meredith, sons-in-law Giordi and Brett, granddaughter Isabella, nieces Kirsten, Sara and Adrienne and nephew Jimmy.
A memorial service for Mary Anne and Warren will be held in Siren, Wisconsin on June 23, 2022.
