In Memory of Mary A. Washington


April 5, 1942 - April 6, 2024

Mary Ann Washington “Ogima giizhi goo kwe”, 82, of Cumberland died on Saturday April 6, 2024, at Cumberland Healthcare. She was born April 5, 1942, in Cumberland, WI to Charlie and Nellie (Nick) Littlepipe. She was married in Chicago, IL to Joseph Washington.

Mary found great joy in working as a seamstress at the Turtle Lake Casino, and also served on the St. Croix Tribal Council. She enjoyed going to ceremonies and pow-wows. Mary took great pride in her heritage and cherished being able to pass down her knowledge of bead work and dancing to her daughter, Karen, and granddaughter, Shawnee. She loved to travel at least once a year with her family. Mary was sure to be found at any casino that offered a seafood buffet.

She was a truly loving mom, grandma, and great grandma. Mary was a foster mom, which led her to adopt her son, Caleb. She was always willing to lend a hand when it came to spiritual guidance. Mary went to many of her grandchildren’s sporting events to cheer them on.

She is survived by her children: Karen Washington (Neil Oustigoff Sr.), and Caleb Washington; grandchildren: Shawnee “Babygirl” Merrill (Joseph Mlejnek), Allison Oustigoff, and Neil Oustigoff Jr.; great grandchildren: Trenton Awonohopay, Tyrone Awonohopay Jr., Teran Awonohopay, Audrey Gasper, Greyson Oustigoff; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Nellie Littlepipe; siblings: Betty Decorah, Mabel Cupp, George Littlepipe, and Harry Littlepipe; and granddaughter, Courtney Oustigoff.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Maple Plain Tribal Center with Chato Gonzalez officiating. Burial will be in Maple Plain Reservation Cemetery. Pallbearers are Bruce Rainey, Reuben Crowfeather Jr., Opwaganse Goodwin, Brian Redman, Neil Oustigoff Jr., and Tristan Rainey. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Sonnenberg, George Rainey, Neil Oustigoff Sr., Jeremy Littlepipe, Joseph Potter, Dwayne McCorrister, Collin Mousseau, and Joseph Mlejnek. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at the Maple Plain Community Center with feast to follow.
