It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, GG, sister, and auntie, Lorraine Margaret Poppie Schroeder (née Gastrow) on July 3, 2023. She peacefully departed this world after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, leaving behind a legacy of love and gratitude. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of being close to her.

Born on January 27, 1935, in Waukesha, WI, to Fred and Peggy Gastrow, Lorraine was a bright light from the very beginning. Her sense of humor never wavered throughout her life, and her infectious laughter filled every room she entered. Lorraine’s vibrant personality brought joy to the lives of her family, friends, and countless others, often waving hello or shaking the hand of every veteran she saw.

Lorraine had a love for dancing and music that first drew her to her husband Keith Poppie, the love of her life. Together they shared two daughters, Kathy and Lori, along with many laughs, hardships, and special memories. They were married for 30 years before Keith’s passing in 1984. She is also preceded in death by her parents, her second husband, Warren Schroeder, as well as family members and friends.

Lorraine was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she leaves behind a big family who loved her dearly. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Inzeo, her daughters, Kathy (Bill) Donley and Lori (Ken) Pederson; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren: Ryan Pederson (Wendi; Aleeya and Levi), Erica Salsbury (Jeff; Carter and Ashton), Erin Kerttula (Matt; Libby and Evie), Karie Lobitz (Matthew; Wyatt and Dylan), Megan Balkowitsch (Nate: Mila and Charlie), and Michelle Pederson (Brooklyn, Makenna, and Raelyn). She adored snuggling her grandbabies and great -grandbabies and loved spending time with them. Lorraine also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Lorraine was a woman of many interests. She was always game for a round of Rummikub, loved a cocktail at happy hour, and enjoyed the sunshine whenever possible, especially in the years she resided in Naples, FL. She dedicated much of her time to volunteering at charity ventures like St. Vincent de Paul’s in an effort to raise money for the less fortunate. She was a loving grandmother who could make a great meal from whatever was in the fridge and gave the best back scratches before bedtime.

Though we mourn Lorraine’s passing, let us also celebrate the remarkable life she lived. Let us remember her abundant laughter, her unwavering love, and her caring nature. In honoring her memory, let us carry forward her legacy of kindness and strive to make the world a happier place

There will be no service per Lorraine’s request. She instead wanted her family together and share stories to celebrate her life. We give our endless gratitude to the amazing staff of Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, WI and St. Croix Hospice who tirelessly cared for Lorraine throughout the end of her time here and kept her spirits up amid a global pandemic and declining health.
