In Memory of Lorraine Barta


February 28, 1931 - August 30, 2023

Lorraine Barta Age 92, of Rice Lake, WI died Wednesday, August 30, 2023 in Rice Lake.

She was born on February 28, 1931 in Rice Lake to Ervin and Florence (Gade) Gerland.

Lorraine attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1949 and worked at Gerland’s Creamery with her mentor, Aunt Loretta Gerland. She was married to J. Blayne Barta on November 8, 1952 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rice Lake. They dairy farmed in Rice Lake Township for many years. She enjoyed the farm, the operation of working on the farm and grew the most beautiful gardens in her yard. Lorraine was a bookkeeper, baker, gardener, loved going to concerts and hosting family events. She hosted the Japanese for the Rice Lake Salute Industry. Lorraine also hosted farm tours for the Elementary and High School. She was active in RL Federated Music Club, RLASD School Board, Town of Rice Lake Planning Commission, CESA and AMPI (Associated Milk Producers Incorporated) Resolutions Committee. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church and active in the choir and the Red Cedar Choir. Lorraine was Barron County Farm Woman of the Year in 1985.

She is survived by 2 sons, Brent (Susan) Barta and Kim Barta; a sister Caroly Dawson; a brother, Don Gerland; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Florence Gerland; infant sister, Shirley Gerland; 2 sisters, Phyllis (Carsten) Anderson and Linda (Robert) Kolzow; sister-in-law, Betsy Gerland; 2 brothers-in-law, Dean Dawson and Wesley (Mabel) Barta.

Funeral Services will be held at 11AM Monday, September 11, 2023 at the First Lutheran Church in Rice Lake, Rev. Jon Cluppert officiating, with interment in Nora Cemetery in Rice Lake. Visitation will be held from 9-11AM Monday, September 11 at the Church. Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake is serving the family with the arrangements.
