In Memory of Leland A. Bishop

August 8, 1941 - August 10, 2023

Leland August Bishop, age 82, of Winter, WI, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Twin Ports Health Services in Superior, WI.

Leland was born August 8, 1941, in Winter, the son of Frank and Esther (Demmin) Bishop.

Lee grew up working on the family farm in Winter until he was drafted into the army in 1965. He served in the Vietnam Conflict as part of the Bravo Company 1st Engineer Battalion clearing obstacles, building roads, airfields, basecamps, and bridges in support of numerous combat operations. Lee was very proud of his service to his country. He returned home to continue farming with his father and married Arlene “Twink” Canestorp on June 25, 1966. Lee held many jobs over his years from working in the woods with his best friend David Butler to holding a factory job at Marquip in Phillips. He made wood pallets for Walter Brothers Lumber in Radisson, constructed windows for Weathershield in Ladysmith, and manufactured homes for Felser Forest Products in Winter. Working with his hands came easy for Lee and he loved welding and working on his farm machinery. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his family home. His love of horses resulted in him having several throughout his lifetime. His favorite breeds were the big draft horses that he enjoyed watching compete in horse pulling events around the area. Lee loved dancing and he & Twink were always ready to polka at any opportunity. His greatest love was always his family. Lee cherished times spent with them at family reunions, card parties, and Christmas get-togethers. In his later years he became increasingly fond of his television westerns. He could very often be found telling the TV heroes how best to defeat the bad guys, and grumbling and grouching when they didn’t take his advice.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Arlene; daughter Shannon, son Curtis (Cindy), son Clinton & son Lukas (Renee); grandchildren Tyler, Cassie, RaeLynn, Evergreen & Olive; brother Cecil; sister Yvonne and many nieces & nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, sister Irene Hammer-Kozik, sister Mae Anderson, brother Ted, sister Lois Carlson, and sister Janet Butler.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church in Winter. Pastor Gwen Downing will officiate with music provided by Jack & Susie Peterson. Burial will be in Winter Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Casket bearers will be Curtis Bishop, Clinton Bishop, Lukas Bishop, Tyler Bishop, David Butler & Jeremiah Knuckey.
