In Memory of Lauryl E. Flatten


April 10, 1921 - December 6, 2023

Lauryl Elizabeth Flatten of Luck, WI died on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at the United Pioneer Home in Luck at the age of 102.

Lauryl was born on April 10, 1921 to Ernest and Lydia (George) McLeod, along with her twin sister Luella.

She grew up with her eight siblings in Centuria, Wisconsin, and graduated from Centuria High School in 1939. Her first job was working in Peterson’s grocery store in Centuria. She worked in many offices during WWII, in several sewing factories, and for many years in banking, retiring from the Polk County Bank.

She married Stanley Nelson in 1943, in Rome, New York. They had two children, Judith (Maier) and Thomas. Stan passed away in 1975. After Stanley’s passing, she married Glen Neslund, who passed away in 1985. Lauryl later married Bob Flatten, who passed away in 2004.

Lauryl was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Balsam Lake for many years. She was also very active with VFW Post 6856, including participating in their trip to Washington, DC. She served on the Balsam Lake Village Board, and the Balsam Lake Cemetery Board and many committees.

Lauryl is predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Lydia; brothers, Donald (Lazette) and Robert (Harriet, Virginia); sisters, Luella (Calvin) Anderson, Effie Ann, and Cathryn (Lyle) Jensen, as well as spouses, Stanley Nelson, Glen Neslund, and Robert Flatten.

Celebrating her memory are her sisters, Joan (Merle) Wulf and Jane (Tom) Larsen; children, Judy (Michael) Maier and Tom (Susan) Nelson; Sandy (Joe) Freeman, Robert (Cheryl) Flatten, David (Eileen) Flatten, Rosemary (Leonard) Harbosky as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lauryl loved to fish, and to host fish fries at her home. She knitted and crocheted, for friends, family, and for many charities. She enjoyed baking for others, and was always ready with a pie or dozens of rosettes. She loved to travel, taking several trips to Cape North in Nova Scotia, Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Canada (fishing!).

Lauryl will be missed and remembered fondly by the multitude of people whose lives she touched. She was a beautiful person inside and out!

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Faith Lutheran Church in Balsam Lake, WI. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at the Milltown VFW Post #6856 located on Highway 46 starting at 3 p.m. that day. Please bring your favorite stories and reminiscences to share.
