In Memory of Larry R. Thompson


July 24, 1941 - October 19, 2023

Larry R. Thompson, age 82, of Spooner, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19th, 2023.

Larry was born on July 24th, 1941, in Chippewa Falls, WI. He is one of the three sons of Kenneth and Mildred (Topper) Thompson. He grew up in New Auburn, WI where he enjoyed playing football, boxing and farming. He graduated from New Auburn high school in 1959 and was the only one in his class that had a car. On January 31st, 1959, Larry was united in marriage to Sharon Fourtner. Larry began his career with Lamperts in Chetek, WI and after a few years he was promoted to manage the lumberyard in Winter, WI. At the age of 26, Larry managed the lumberyard in Spooner, where he resided with his wife and kids. He was awarded “Manager of the Year” in 1979. He later became the Building and Grounds Supervisor for Spooner High School, until his retirement. Aside from his work, Larry enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing with his sons. Many memories were made on family trips to the Thompson Cabin in Barnes, WI, which Larry purchased with his brothers. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and former Chief for the Spooner Fire Department.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Janice Edinger of Spooner; brother, Jim (Nina) Thompson of Chetek; daughter-in-law, Ann Thompson of Hastings, MN; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two nephews, and a niece.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon; sons, Jeff, Steve, and Jamie; brother, Robert; and son-in-law, Jason Edinger.

Visitation will be held at the Spooner Funeral Home on Thursday, October 26th from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Funeral service will be at Faith Lutheran Church on Friday, October 27th at 11:00am with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will be held at the Spooner Cemetery with a luncheon to follow.

Casket bearers will be Josh, Asa, Shane and Kevin Thompson, Jeff and Dana Sando.
