Harold Walter Liesenfelt of Long Lake died peacefully on March 14, 2023 at Chippewa Manner in Chippewa Falls, WI at the age of 90.

Harold, fondly know as Hal, was born on September 29, 1932 to Walter and Margaret (Calmus) Liesenfelt in Chicago, IL.

He served in the Army and Air Force Reserve during the Korean War (1954-1956). Hal also attended Northern Illinois University and graduated with a teaching degree, later earning his Master’s degree from Northwestern University. The first day of his career as an educator he met fellow teacher Janet “Jan” Joan Farlow. They were married one year later on August 17, 1958 and established a home in Hoffman Estates, IL where they raised two daughters. Hal worked for thirty-one years as a 7th and 8th grade math teacher. Summers were spent at the family retreat on Long Lake in Sarona where they purchased their first cabin, later building a new lake home in 1975. In 1988 retirement called, allowing Hal and Jan to permanently locate to their summer home. Hal was enthusiastically involved in a variety of clubs and activities. He was a Shriner, Elk, Mason, and active member of the Long Lake Lutheran Church for more than 30 years. When not tinkering in his garage, Hal also enjoyed boating parties, playing cards, and was a voracious reader of world history. He also enjoyed a round of golf and participated in leagues at Butternut Hills Golf Course in Sarona, WI well into his mid-80’s. Late afternoons Hal could be found pontificating to friends and family about a wide range of topics while enjoying a glass of Evan Williams over the rocks. To escape the cold, Hal and Jan spent 29 years wintering in Myrtle Beach, SC. and traveling (Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, France, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, England, Canada).

Hal is survived by two daughters: Jill (Scott) Swanson of Chippewa Falls WI and Jody (Rick) Kumlien of Stoughton, WI; six grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

Hal was predeceased by his parents, and spouse of 61 years, Jan. A gathering of friends and family for a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Memorials will be given in Hal’s name to Meals on Wheels of Barron County, Long Lake Lutheran Church, and Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary.
