In Memory of Glen E. Hughes
Glen Eugene Hughes, age 82, a resident of Dairyland, WI., passed away on November 28, 2024 at home with his loved ones by his side.
Glen was born at the Vernon and Julia Hughes' homestead in Dairyland, Wisconsin on May 11, 1942. He attended school in three different Dairyland Wis schools until the 8th grade (1956) at which time he attended Webster Integrated Schools where he graduated in May of 1961 with a diploma. He was an active member of the sports teams throughout high school. Glen was employed by Jim Gatten in Danbury as a service attendant his Junior and Senior years. Glen married his high school sweetheart, Janice Christianson, on September 1, 1962. John Glen was born in 1964 in Fredric, Wisconsin. Brent Eugene was born in 1966 in Fredric, Wisconsin. Laurie Ruth was born in 1968 in Stillwater, MN. Kerrie Jane was born in 1972 in Stillwater, MN.
Glen served as cub master for John prior to leaving their Minnesota home in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. Glen furthered his education at the St. Paul Technical Institute in Quality Assurance Supervision. He was employed as an Engine Assembly worker in May of 1961 at the Onan Corporation in Fridley, MN where he was employed until 1976 at which time, he took the opportunity to start his own company, Hughes Excavating Inc. The corporation was in full swing for seven years. Glen worked for the Douglas County Highway Department for four years. Glen was Township of Dairyland, Wisconsin Constable. Glen served on the Douglas County Board of Supervisors. Dairyland Town Board, Dairyland Fire Department. Glen drove school-bus for the School District of Webster for two years. He was asked to return to work at Onan Corporation in 1983 and took his job as a Quality Technician in 1986 until his retirement in 2002. While employed with Onan Corporation, Glen was active on their bowling league, Baseball Team, and golf league.
Glen was known to tell many stories. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends taking fishing and hunting trips. After retiring, Glen and his best-friend, Dell gathered up the wives and took their dream trip to Alaska for 2 months. Glen had the amazing ability to put grandchildren to sleep along with himself in that magic grandpa way. We hope you are fishing in heaven with some of the very special people that went before you.
Preceded in death by his father, Vernon Lafayette Hughes; mother, Julia Harriet Hughes (Corbin); 2 brothers, Johnny Hughes (Jean Thomas) and Harry Hughes; 3 sisters, Verna (Herbert) Magnuson (Hughes), Dorothy (Marvin) Visger (Hughes) and Hazel (Marvin) Johnson (Hughes); father-in-law, Romain Christianson; mother-in-law, Marjorie Christianson (Meyers).
Survived by Wife, Janice Ruth Hughes (Christianson); two sons, John Glen Hughes (Margaret), Brent Eugene Hughes (Laurie); daughters, Laurie Ruth Westlund (Timothy) and Kerrie Jane Hughes; grandchildren, Tina Marie Welle (Kevin), Krista Lynn Hughes (Darrin Wong), Mikaela Ann Hughes (Matt Holter), Joshua Vernon Hughes (Kaila), Justin John Westlund (Rachel), Caleb Myron Westlund (Ellyn Buelke), Cole Theodore Westlund (Shanna), Travis Ronald Hughes (Kelly), Cody Glen Hughes (Ashley), Megan Julia Hughes (Mark Sandstrom), Jordan Matthew Hull and 22 Great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and many friends.
The memorial service for Glen will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM (visitation from 1-2 PM) at the Dairyland Community Center in Danbury, WI. (1232 School Rd.) with Richard Gustafson officiating.
