Excilda “Sandy” A. Bird, age 87, of Lac Courte Oreille, died Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Hayward Health Services.

Excilda Ann Smith was born February 10, 1935, in Hayward, the daughter of Fred and Madge (Heenan) Smith.

Sandy earned her Registered Nursing Degree and served in St Joseph Hospital in Chicago, before moving back to LCO and serving at the Community Health Center until age 83. In 2009, Sandy was honored as the LCO Ojibwe Woman of the Year, at the Honor the Earth Pow-wow for her contributions to the community.

She is survived by her sons Louis Traverzo, Robert Bird, Daryll Bird, Gregory Bird & Daniel Bird; daughters Lynette Bird, Mary Bird, Natalie Bird & Lorinda Bird; many grandchildren & great grandchildren; sister Lorraine Smith; many nieces & nephews.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Leonard Smith & Richard Smith; sisters Geraldine Butterfield, Frieda McPherson Smith, Jeannette Lowry, Marge O’Leary, Beatrice Stewart & Bertha Christensen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2022, at St. Francis Solanus Indian Mission in Reserve. Father Gregory Hopefl will officiate with music provided by Sister Felissa Zander. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2022, at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward.

Honorary casket bearers will be Myron Cloud, Daniel Traverzo & Derrick Traverzo.

Casket bearers will be Christian Bird, Bobby Bird Jr., Daryll Bird, Gregory Bird, Robert Bird & Louis Traverzo.
