In Memory of Edith M. Leckel
Edith Leckel, age 94, a current resident of Duluth, and formerly a very long-time resident of Spooner, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at Aftenro Assisted Living in Duluth.
Edith was born on January 14, 1928, in Phelps, Wisconsin, to parents Frank and Violet (Jacobs) Fredrick.
When she was very young, the family moved to the Minong area where she attended and graduated from the Minong Schools in 1946. She went on to further her education by attending the Barron County Normal School where she obtained her teaching certificate. She was employed to teach at the Tadpole Corners School where she met Henry Leckel at a pie social. On May 16, 1951, she was united in marriage to him in Pine City, Minnesota. She would continue to teach at Tadpole Corners until the mid-1950’s when she left teaching to raise her family. They moved their young family to Altoona, Wisconsin, for a few years and then back to the Spooner area in 1963. She continued to live there until 5 years ago when her health moved her to Two Harbors and then to Duluth to be closer to family.
Edith is survived by her children: Sandy Petersen of Two Harbors, MN, Dave Leckel of Superior, WI, grandchildren: Linda, Barb, Alice, Leandra, Paulina, Tirzah, several great grandchildren, nephews David Fredrick and Steve Hills, and niece Vicki (Mark) Drake.
Edith is preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry, granddaughter Samara Petersen, son in law Lance Petersen, brother Clarence Fredrick, and sister Marcella Hills.
Funeral services for Edith Leckel will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at 1pm, at the Spooner Funeral Home with visitation being held from noon until 1 on Thursday at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow next to her husband Henry at the Spooner Veterans Memorial Cemetery west of Spooner.
