In Memory of Dulcie Wolf

December 1, 1929 - September 3, 2019

Dulcie (Phillippena) McClammy Wolf, Ozhaawindibekwe / Pahá Zí Wįyą, 89, of LCO, a member of the Ft. Peck Assiniboine Tribe and matriarch of the Wolf family, started her journey accompanied by the thunderbirds in the early morning hours of September 3, 2019 in Hayward, Wisconsin.

She was born December 1, 1929 in Poplar, Montana, the daughter of William “Bill” A. and Phillippena “Phil” Knapp McClammy, the youngest of 9 children. Everyone in town called her “baby sister”. She was united in marriage to Raymond Wolf, Sr., at the Presbyterian church March 12, 1949 in Poplar.

In their early years of marriage, the family followed construction across the United States. Dulcie planted flowers each time they stopped and set up camp, knowing she might not be there long enough to see them bloom, but made a pretty garden for the next people. In 1962 they settled in Oregon, where she and Ray were members of the Portland American Indian Center and in 1970 they were founding members of the Annual Delta Park Powwow and Encampment in Portland, which is in its 49th year! In Oregon City she organized a group of friends and founded F.I.S.H. (Fellowship in Serving Humanity), a volunteer organization to help families and elderly. The family moved in 1974 to Phoenix & Prescott, Arizona then later Ray accepted a promotion in DC. In 1988 he retired, and they moved back to LCO to his ancestral home. Dulcie, being a new elder, marveled at how well elders were treated by our tribal culture. Besides being a domestic engineer, she was a talented artist and loved making beautiful things. Her talents included gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting, beading (she could bead on anything!), ceramics and making silver & turquoise jewelry. She attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe NM to learn jewelry making. Each summer Dulcie and Ray would return to Poplar and Wolf Point, MT, in time for the Wild Horse Stampede. They loved reunions, dances and rodeos with old friends and relatives!

Dulcie was involved in many social and non-profit organizations throughout her life, most recently as a charter member of the LCO Elders Association and previously with Great Lakes Native American Elders Association and the LCO AmVets Auxiliary. Dulcie was always community-minded and wanted to keep elders engaged in activities despite her own physical limitations from crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis.  She served on the Reserve Elderly Nutrition Advisory Board where her sister-in-law, Darlene Hudren, was Director. She was engaged in helping organize activities for the elders of LCO. For a time, she was part of the Senior Companions and the Elder program at the LCO K-12 School and helped children with their reading assignments. She also worked with Dorothy Tate to sew regalia for students so they could participate in school powwows. She and her buddies (Liz Schmock and Dorothy Tate) would then head to the Grindstone Casino on Fridays after school. Bingo and slot machines were some of her favorite past times and she made many friends at the casino.

After Ray passed in 2002, Dulcie started an annual “Grandparents Day” picnic that included jam sessions with local musicians for the elders. The event grew too big for the family home at Wolf Point (LCO) so the next year it was moved to the Pavilion in front of the clinic, then the year after that to the Bass Lake Town Hall building. She loved listening to WOJB’s Honky Tonk program, French-Canadian fiddling, bluegrass, Chicken Scratch, Mariachi and Cajun music, along with old time country western tunes. Dulcie loved playing cards and would say “deal ‘em out!” when family came to visit. She went through many decks of cards, three sets of Golden Girls series and burned out five DVD players. She almost wore out Hwy 2 going back and forth to check on her brothers in Poplar and then back again to LCO to check on her machines…oh, and kids!

She is survived by daughters Dulcie Rae Wolf (Bryan Chance), Dr. Iva GreyWolf (David Clark) of Roseburg OR, Phyllis Emma Wolf, Mary Irene Wolf, and Utina Malnourie; sons Robert Lee McClammy, Robert Sander Jr., all of LCO; cousin George Sanders of Poplar MT; brothers-in-law Richard and Donald (Shirley) Wolf of San Diego CA; sister of the heart Susi Holecz of Oregon City OR,; daughters of the heart Elaine Miller, Kathy Huskey and Beverly Smith; grandchildren: Romee (Scott) McAdams, Dulcie Nicole (Ernie) Bear Don’t Walk, Raylene (Jake Hensen), James, Anangookwe, Michael, Mark, Tristen, Mariah, Eliana & Agnes and many more from marriages and adoptions; many great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild Raelyn Wellman, nieces and nephews, and special friend Ellen Martin.
