In Memory of Donald J. Reed
Donald James Reed, age 92, of Shell Lake, entered into eternal life on September 18, 2023, while at Marshfield Medical Center. He was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, on August 3, 1931, to John and Grace Reed.
Don's adventurous life journey began at the age of 17 when he began sailing on the Great Lakes. He worked for many years on the iron ore boats shoveling 6 tons of coal every 4 hours. He loved to tell stories about his time sailing. Don also worked on the railroad, at American Motors and for the Shell Lake School District, spreading many smiles along the way. Don also owned a liquor store with his wife, Anna, in Shell Lake.
Don was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Shell Lake and was very devoted to the Lord. He sang in the church choir and was involved in the Knights of Columbus. He always offered anyone a ride to Mass who was in need, even driving 60 miles to pick up the grandkids to take them to church. Don also loved to drive across the country to visit beloved family and friends. He never knew a stranger and would always greet you with a smile, a compliment or one of his many anecdotes.
Don was united in marriage to Anna Fox of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on January 11, 1963. He was a loving caregiver during their 54 years of marriage, especially the last 17 years as she fought her battle with cancer. Anna preceded him in death on November 13, 2017. He always looked forward to reuniting with the love of his life in heaven. Together, he and his "Babes" are smiling down upon all their loved ones.
In addition to his parents and wife, Don is also preceded in death by his sister, Jean (Jerry) Mack, his brother John Jr. (Lori) Reed and his son-in-law, Bill Steiger.
Don is survived by his children, Bob (Sue) Dvoran of Saukville, WI, Gary (Sheryl) Dvoran of Fountain Hills, AZ, Linda Reed Steiger of Ashland, WI, Don Reed Jr. of Melbourne, FL, Lance (Kim) Reed of Poplar, WI, and Sean (Tobi) Reed of Fairhope, AL. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Sherry (Wayne) Prom, Daniel (Kathy) Dvoran, David (Paula) Dvoran, Angela Dvoran, Angela (Matthew) Odom, Anthony Germinaro, Cody (Rashmi) Reed, Kacie (Mike) McMillan, Karlie (Ryne) Slivensky, Turner Reed and Trenton Reed. Don also has 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sibling, his twin brother Bob Reed of Menomonee Falls, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dunham and the staff at the Shell Lake Health Care Center for the great care provided.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Shell Lake, Wisconsin. Visitation will be at 10:00am, funeral mass at 11:00am followed by lunch in the church hall. Graveside services to follow lunch. Rev. Philip Juza is officiating.
