In Memory of Daryl Coons Sr.


September 2, 1924 - December 3, 2019

Daryl C. Coons, age 95, of Chief Lake, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at his home.

Daryl Charles Coons was born September 2, 1924 in Reserve, WI, the son of Charles and Nancy (Runke) Coons. He attended Whitefish Elementary School until the 8th grade then attended Hayward High School, graduating in June of 1941. Daryl proudly served in the United States Navy from May 12, 1943 – March 12, 1946 and is a veteran of World War II. He was united in marriage to Helen Bailey on November 22, 1947 in Napoleon, OH. Daryl worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, retiring in 1980. After returning to Hayward he worked as a Comptroller for LCO, served as Vice-Chairman on the Tribal Governing Board, and was President of the College and Board of Regents. Daryl served on many boards, Milwaukee Indian Health Board, LCO Board of Regents, LCO Health Center Board, LCO Gaming Commission, LCO Elders Commission and was a member of the Whitefish Presbyterian Indian Mission Church.

He is survived by his sons Daryl Coons Jr., Gordon (Debbie) Coons, Guyon Coons, Timothy Coons; daughters Nancy (Michael) Cavlan, Tessa Coons, Leslie Coons; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Daryl was preceded by his wife of 68 years Helen; parents Charles & Nancy; sisters Anona LaRonge and Thaymar Diamond.

Tribal Funeral Rites will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward with Gimiwan, Dustin Burnette officiating. Burial will be in Whitefish Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by LCO AmVets Post 1998. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 6th at the funeral home.

Honorary bearers will be Gary Aultman, Bill Morrow, George Morrow and Mark Ojibway.

Casket bearers will be Phil Aulwes, Michael Cavlan, Dylan Coons, Ethan Coons, Dennis Olson Jr. and Nick Schlotz.
