In Memory of Charles R. Nelson

March 21, 1938 - January 20, 2023

Charles (Chuck) R. Nelson, age 84, of Barron, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023 at the place he called home for 54 years.

Chuck was born on March 21, 1938 to Harris and Etta (Sankey) Nelson of Rice Lake.

He was baptized and confirmed at Stanfold Lutheran Church in Rice Lake. He went to Golden Valley grade school and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1956.

He started milking cows while in high school, selling his herd in 1961 because he was drafted into the Army, and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. He served from 1961 until 1963. He declined a reenlistment for his greatest love was to go home and start milking cows again.

He met Betty Hanson, and they were married on May 8, 1965. He worked for Baribeau Implement and Vonasek and Schieffer Construction, building the new college in Rice Lake. They bought their farm in 1969 and farmed together while raising their family. Chuck and Jason farmed side by side until the last 2 cows were milked in March of 2020.

Chuck looked forward to deer hunting because his Minnesota Conrad family would come. It was always a tradition to do Friday night fish fry when they were here.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; sons, Jeffrey (Lisa), Jason (Valerie), both of Barron, Jed (Heidi) of Ridgeland; daughter Jodene (Joel) Nelson of Prairie Farm; grandchildren, Ryan (Kelly), Mitchell (Alida), Justin (Patty), Jarek, Tiarra (Kent), Jayce, Haylin, Mitch and Joe (Shaunah), Sampson and Brittney Swan; great-grandchildren, Kassidy, Kamryn, Wyatt, Harper, Lorelei, Parker, Ryder and Aubry; brothers, Gordy (Shirley) and Allen of Rice Lake; as well as many family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Willie & Delores Hanson; and brother-in-law, Ken Hanson.

A funeral service for Chuck Nelson will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Stanfold Lutheran Church in Rice Lake. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 24 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Rausch and Steel Funeral Home in Barron and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Stanfold Cemetery.
