In Memory of Charles Potting Sr.


March 3, 1944 - April 26, 2023

Charles Potting Sr., age 79, a resident of Shell Lake, Wisconsin, died on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Shell Lake Health Care.

Charles was born on March 3, 1944, on the family farm near East Farmington, Wisconsin, 1 of 16 children to parents Leonard and Mathilda (Jahnke) Potting.

He grew up working on the family farm and also for a neighbor on his farm and by the age of 14, had earned enough money to purchase his first car a Ford Thunderbird. At the age of 18, he joined the US Army, where he would serve 2 and a half years with early release due to overseas duty. After his honorable discharge in 1968, he lived in the Twin Cities area and work various jobs including for Ford and also Whirlpool. During the 70’s, he moved to the Somerset area where he owned a local bar for several years, worked in the stone work industry, and also Industrial Sales. During this time, he met Rosemary Shay in which 2 daughters were born to this union, and later met Renee Williamson and a son and daughter were born to this union. Afterwards, he lived with several family members and eventually to the Spooner area. He enjoyed playing cribbage, cards, doing little things to keep busy, was a creative woodworker, and enjoyed sitting on the deck relaxing.

Charles is survived by his children: Amy (David) Thorsen of Roberts, WI, Angela (Mike King) Potting of Roberts, WI, Charles Potting Jr of Milltown, WI, Renita (Mike) Christner of Spooner, WI, 10 grandchildren: Aidan, Brock, Tyler, Matthew, Divinity, Charles, Mila, Renesmay, Hunter, Hailie, sisters: Bea, Maryann, Darlene, Lorraine, brother Dennis, and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Mathilda; grandson Preston, and brothers and sisters: Ambrose, Bernice, Lucy, Wally, Donni, Kenny, Leonard Jr, Helen, Ray, and Michael.

A visitation for Charles Potting Sr will be held at Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 265 WI-35 Osceola, WI 54020, on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral service to immediately follow
