Ron Groom was born at home in the Township of Russell in Bayfield, WI on May 7, 1938. His grandmother, Fanny Hyde, was the midwife who delivered him to the proud parents of Floyd and Evelyn Groom. Ron was the youngest boy of the Groom clan with 4 older brothers.
Growing up, Ron helped on the farm until he was old enough to travel on his own. Along with two of his cousins, Ron left Bayfield and headed to Kenosha, WI where he found a job at American Motors Inc. During this time, Ron became a regular customer at a local family-owned Drive-Inn in Kenosha. Where he happened to meet a waitress, who was the owner’s daughter, and her name was Donna. Donna turned out to be the love of his life and they were married in Racine on Saturday, November 19, 1960.
Ron worked at various factory jobs in Racine, WI until they decided to relocate their family north to
Mercer, WI in 1974. Ron acquired a job at Tri-State Homes for years before taking over the newspaper route, delivering the Iron County Miner newspapers for over 20 years until retirement.
It was very seldom that you would see Ron without Donna. They were two peas in a pod and would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this November. Ron enjoyed working on older model cars, lawn mowers, and tractors. He was an avid racecar fan…Back in the day, one of his favorite pastimes was spending time at the ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI watching his brother and nephews’ race, and he made a point to never miss a televised Daytona 500 NASCAR race.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Ron Groom on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the Airport Inn in Ashland, WI. Luncheon provided.
