The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Board awarded President and CEO Steve Massey of Westsfields Hospital and Clinic (Westfields) with a Futuremaker Award Tuesday evening during the Board meeting held at the College. The award spotlights Westfields longstanding partnership and support of Northwood Technical College and its students.
“The WTCS Board’s Futuremaker Award is bestowed upon companies that are leaders in their communities and supportive of their local technical college,” said S. Mark Tyler, president of the WTCS Board. “Westfields Hospital and Clinic is a perfect example of a company that is doing just that. They not only support Northwood Tech through joint fundraising efforts and corporate giving, they also hire their graduates and rely on the college to offer continuing education for their employees.”
Most recently, Westfields identified a regional shortage of medical laboratory technicians and asked Northwood Tech to consider developing programming to create a pipeline of graduates. When appropriate facility space was identified as a barrier, Westfields offered to donate a building it owned between their campus and the Northwood Tech campus. In addition, Westfields helped fundraise to do facility improvements and support a successful program launch.
“Westfields Hospital exemplifies true partnership, and their ongoing efforts to support workforce development are what the Futuremaker Award is all about,” said Northwood Tech President John Will. “Steve Massey and his team have consistently provided leadership to help people learn valuable skills that help not only the Hospital, but the broader community. We truly appreciate the opportunity to continue to work with them to make a positive difference.”
The collaboration between Westfields and Northwood Tech resulted in a capital campaign that raised more than $800,000 in private grants and donations. This funding will allow for the interior renovation of the donated building, creating a high-tech space to support Northwood Tech’s first cohort of medical laboratory technician students, who will start the program this fall. In addition to this project, Westfields is a longtime clinical partner of the College and regular supporter of innovative workforce development strategies.
