WASHBURN COUNTY -- In a recent public notification, the Washburn County Sheriff's Office has informed the community that James Sorchych, a convicted sex offender, is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
The decision to alert the Washburn County community about Sorchych's release was made by a core team responsible for reviewing Special Sex Offender Bulletin Notifications forwarded by the Department of Corrections.
Sorchych will remain under the close supervision of local Probation Agents, and he is obligated to adhere to specific and detailed rules prescribed by the Department of Corrections (DOC). These rules include no unsupervised contact with minors, cooperation with electronic monitoring, and a lifetime registration with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registration Program.
Of particular note is the fact that Sorchych is currently releasing homeless. The Washburn County Sheriff's Office emphasized that he will also be subject to GPS monitoring through the Department of Corrections.
The public notification underscores that sex offenders have always been a part of communities, but it wasn't until the enactment of Act 440 in 1997 that law enforcement was enabled to share this information with the public.
The Washburn County Sheriff's Office stressed that the notification is not intended to instill fear but rather to keep the public informed, believing that an informed community is a safer community.
