Two Die From Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning In St. Croix Falls

ST. CROIX FALLS, WI — An elderly couple has died from an apparent carbon monoxide poisoning after authorities discovered their bodies following a routine welfare check at a residence in Polk County.

On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, authorities from the St. Croix Falls Police Department responded to a residence on Overlook Court for a welfare check.

Upon entry into the residence, officers discovered the bodies of 84-year-old retired Polk County Judge James Erickson and his 82-year-old wife, Charlotte Erickson.

Chief of Police Erin Murphy from the St. Croix Falls Police Department told DrydenWire.com on Monday that preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation point toward carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause of their deaths. Carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas, can be fatal if inhaled in high concentrations.

However, Chief Murphy emphasized that the case is still actively under investigation, pending the complete autopsy report and the Medical Examiner's findings.
