Tragic Crash Claims Life: St. Croix County Records 13th Fatality In 2023

ST. CROIX COUNTY (DrydenWire) - On November 29th, 2023, a single-vehicle crash in the 2300 block of Hwy 63/64, Town of Cylon, claimed the life of Darwin Maradiaga-Castellon, 27, of St. Paul.

The initial investigation indicates icy road conditions as a possible factor, marking this incident as the 13th fatality recorded by St. Croix County in 2023, according to a press release from the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office.

On Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, at 6:52am, the St. Croix County Emergency Communication Center received a call alerting them to a single vehicle crash in the 2300 block of Hwy 63/64, located in the Town of Cylon.

Upon arrival, deputies located a 2004 Dodge Durango off the roadway. The vehicle had been traveling east on Hwy 63/64 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, entering the north ditch before colliding with a tree.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Darwin Maradiaga-Castellon age 27, of St. Paul, sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

Deputies, New Richmond EMS, and first responders administered life-saving measures at the scene. Mr. Maradiaga- Castellon was transported to Regions Hospital by ambulance and later died from his injuries.

The passenger, Wilmer Redondo-Reyes, age 39, of St. Paul, sustained minor injuries.

Initial investigation indicate Mr. Maradiaga-Castellon and Mr. Redondo-Reyes were wearing seat belts. Icy road conditions may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, New Richmond Fire and EMS, and Deer Park Fire.

This incident marks the 13th fatality recorded by St. Croix County in 2023.

This crash remains under investigation.
