WASHBURN COUNTY -- Northern Wisconsin Based Engineers, Inc. (NWBE) of Hayward would like to recognize and congratulate several of its employees who were award recipients for managing the construction of two area Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) construction projects.
Every year the ACPA (American Concrete Pavers Association) awards a concrete paving project with the “National Award for Excellence in Concrete Pavement”. The Wisconsin Concrete Pavers Association (WCPA) nominated the U.S. 63, Greenwood Avenue to Poplar Street project in downtown Spooner in the category of Municipal Streets & Intersections. Project staff were “Gold Winners” at the ACPA’s 60th Annual “Excellence in Concrete Pavement” awards presentation during their annual meeting on Dec. 14, 2023, in Marco Island, Fla., where a total of 31 projects were recognized.
NWBE staff managed construction of the 1.2-mile length urban reconstruction project in downtown Spooner on behalf of WisDOT, with Rebecca Olson of Foxboro, Wis., serving as project leader. She was assisted by Mike Shervey, Rice Lake; Mark Reed, Spooner; Matt Hughes, Brule; Diane Slick, Foxboro; Jeff Stellrecht, Shell Lake; Bryce Highstrom, Siren; and Dolan Highstrom, Webster. Beth Cunningham of Cumberland served as the WisDOT project manager of the project. Most of the construction took place in 2022 with crews installing new concrete pavement, curb and gutter, sewers, water mains and sidewalk, all while maintaining access and traffic flow and coordinating work with local businesses along the route. The team hit several milestones ahead of schedule and opened the highway to traffic more than two months before the original completion date. Trierweiler Construction & Supply Co. of Marshfield was the contractor.
In 2020 NWBE project staff received an ACPA gold award in the Municipal Streets & Intersections category for managing construction of the 1.4-mile U.S. 2 (Belknap Street) urban reconstruction project in the city of Superior. Pete Dieckman of Hayward served as project leader; he was assisted by Rebecca Olson, Pat Lancour of Hayward, Mike Shervey, Mark Reed, Matt Hughes and Brody Zembo of Superior. Brendan Dirkes of Lake Nebagamon served as the WisDOT project manager. U.S. 2 between Banks and Hill avenues received new concrete pavement, curb and gutter, sanitary and storm sewer, water mains, sidewalk, retaining walls and landscaping features, while traffic flow and pedestrian and vehicle access was maintained. Chippewa Concrete Services, Inc. of Chippewa Falls was the contractor.
Each project won a statewide WisDOT Excellence in Concrete Paving award before being nominated for the national award. While under contract with WisDOT for each project, NWBE oversaw all contractor work, provided material testing and reporting, operated survey instruments to check line and grade, measured and computed quantities for payment, prepared contractor pay estimates and conducted biweekly meetings with contractors and businesses.
