My husband, who is from Ireland, and I live in Spooner off Hwy K and were expecting our second child last Friday the 7th.
We went overdue and I went into labor at 12:30 this morning [Thursday, 13 October]. Seeing as our first child took 24 hours to arrive once I went into labor, we assumed this one may be about 12 hours or so. We labored at home for awhile and had a friend who is a doula on her way from Minneapolis. It was getting intense so around 3:15 am we started heading to Rice Lake for the hospital. At about Sarona, I told my husband I felt like I needed to push. He was trying to be calm and supportive and kept saying, "No, you can't push yet. Just keep breathing! Your water isn't broke so you can't push yet, the baby isn't ready. You're doing great, just breath deep!" By the time we were about 6 miles away I told him the baby was coming and I couldn't hold it back anymore and I had to push.
I suddenly could feel the baby's head so I told him he needed to kick it down a notch! He kept telling me to stay calm and not push. I called the hospital again and told them I was having the baby in the car and they needed to meet us at the doors. All the while I'm saying, "Come on baby, stay in there! I'm begging you please, please, please don't come yet! Just stay in there!" As we were getting off at the exit, I figured we were close enough so I pushed and felt half the baby come out and I started screaming, "The baby's head is here! I'm sitting on the baby's head! Don't stop at that stop sign just go!" LOL.
A turn or two later and we were in the parking lot, I pushed and felt the baby come out completely. I said, "The baby is out! The baby is out" while he said "Are you serious? Are you sure?" He stopped at the doors and the nurse was slowly walking to the car while I'm screaming. He ran around the other side of the car while telling the nurse I was saying I delivered the baby. In the meantime, I'm screaming and pounding on the window trying to get her to move faster.
I remember her opening the door and me saying that the baby was in my pajamas. My husband said he didn't believe I had delivered the baby until he suddenly saw the baby in the darkness of the car. The nurses all came around with a bed, clamped and cut the cord before rushing our baby off. I remember a nurse coming up and asking how I was doing and I sighed and said, "I feel great!" Just because I was not in pain anymore. Lol. We didn't find out what we were having and ended up having a little boy! I kept saying, "It's a boy! It's a boy!" Lol
The funny part about all of this is that I had been telling my Dr and co-workers that my biggest fear, based on a dream I had, was that I was going to have the baby in the car and it actually happened!
As they wheeled me in and past my Dr I joked, "I told you this was going to happen!" You hear about this stuff but never in a million years did I think I would be the one it actually happened to!
We can laugh about it now but at the time it was absolutely terrifying for the both of us.
