Spooner Man Receives Prison Sentence for Battery to an Officer

A Spooner Man was sentenced in Washburn County Circuit Court on February 27, 2017 to 1 year and 6 months confinement in State Prison for Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, a Class H Felony.

According to the criminal complaint received and reviewed by DrydenWire.com, charges were filed against Jeffrey Lenz on March 2, 2016 for Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, a Class H Felony, and Misdemeanor Bail Jumping. The criminal complaint states that Spooner Police Officers along with a Washburn County Sheriff's Deputy were dispatched to a call of a possibly intoxicated person in a snow bank on Front Street in the City of Spooner, Wisconsin.

Officers located the individual who was identified as Jeffery Lenz, of Spooner, WI. Lenz indicated to officers that he was injured, pointing at his throat. When officers attempted to assist Lenz into a squad car to wait inside for Emergency Services to arrive, Lenz attempted to strike one of the officers. At that point in time, Lenz was taken into custody. The criminal complaint continues stating that while officers conducted a standard procedural search of Lenz's person and clothing, for safety purposes, Lenz “head-butted” one of the officers on the scene, striking the officer on the side of the head with his own head. Lenz was transported to Spooner Health Systems to be medically cleared. The officer also was taken to Spooner Health Systems for evaluation of his injury.

Public record indicates that Lenz also was sentenced on February 27, 2017 for domestic abuse related charges stemming from an earlier incident in Spooner, Wisconsin in January 2016.

The criminal complaint, in that case, also received and reviewed by DrydenWire.com, states that Spooner Police Officers took Lenz into custody based on an apprehension request issued by the Department of Corrections on January 6, 2016. Officers did locate drug paraphernalia in the possession of Lenz at that time.

Spooner Police Officers conducted a follow-up interview with the female who had been living with Lenz at the time of the incident, according to the criminal complaint. She advised officers that on December 31, 2015, Lenz had left the residence and returned later very intoxicated. Lenz initiated a confrontation with the female and grabbed her by the neck and punched her in the face with a closed fist. The female reported that 2 other individuals were there and it took both of them to “pull him off” her. She advised officers that she didn't report it right away because she was trying to help Lenz.

Charges of Misdemeanor Domestic Battery, Misdemeanor Domestic Disorderly Conduct, and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia were filed against Lenz on February 2, 2016 stemming from that incident.

According to public record, Lenz entered a plea of guilty on October 10, 2016 to the Felony charge of Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer and the charge of Disorderly Conduct.

Lenz received a total sentence of 3 years for the conviction of Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer, with the first year and six months of confinement in prison and the final year and six months under supervision by the Department of Corrections. Lenz also received a sentence of 90 days in County Jail for the conviction of disorderly conduct. The remaining charges against Lenz were all dismissed but read in by the Court.
