SHELL LAKE, WI — On April 1, 2025, voters in the Shell Lake School District — including parts of Barron, Burnett, and Washburn counties — cast their ballots to decide whether to approve a referendum allowing the district to exceed its revenue cap on a non-recurring basis for four years.
The Shell Lake School District Board of Education initially approved the resolutions for the referendum during a special meeting on January 13, 2025, citing the need to maintain high-quality education and services for students.

Shell Lake School District Exceed Revenue Limit Referendum
Shall the School Board of the School District of Shell Lake be authorized to exceed the revenue limit under Section 121.91 of the Wisconsin Statutes beginning with the 2025-26 school year through the 2028-29 school year on a non-recurring basis by the following amounts for the purpose of paying expenses related to ongoing operational costs to include maintaining educational programming, educational resources, staffing and maintenance needs as follows: $505,000 for the 2025-26 school year, $875,000 for the 2026-27 school year, $1,285,000 for the 2027-28 school year and $1,720,000 for the 2028-29 school year as provided in the foregoing resolution?
