Senator Stafsholt’s Law Enforcement Training Bill Signed Into Law

MADISON, WI -- Senator Rob Stafsholt (R - New Richmond) made the following comments after another bill he authored was signed into law this week. SB 573 increases the amount of payment the state issues to law enforcement agencies in order to pay for the training and certification of law enforcement officers.

“Our law enforcement officers go above and beyond every day to meet the growing demand for safe communities in our area and around the state. To meet this demand, our officers are in need of updated training and recertification. This training is costly for our law enforcement agencies, and this bill will help fund this needed training.”

“Under current law, the money for this training is sent from the Department of Justice to local governments, and then the money is sent from local governments to the law enforcement agencies. This bill actually cuts out a step in the process by sending the money directly from the Department of Justice to our law enforcement agencies. This is a common sense change that reduces unnecessary delays and headaches.”

“Earlier in the process, Chief Craig Yehlik from New Richmond and Chief Dan Orr from Hammond drove down to Madison and testified next to me to support this change. Our local law enforcement work tirelessly to keep us safe, and I was proud to push this bill forward with their help”.
