Senator Stafsholt Urges Local Poultry Farmers To File Claim

Farmers Affected by Pure Prairie Poultry’s Bankruptcy Urged to File Trust Claims, Says Senator Stafsholt.

Senator Stafsholt Urges Local Poultry Farmers To File Claim

New Richmond, WI — Senator Rob Stafsholt released the following statement after local poultry farmers have been financially burdened by the sudden closure of an out-of-state poultry company. The company, Pure Prairie Poultry LLC, filed for bankruptcy and closed its processing plant in Charles City, Iowa:

“I am urging everyone that has been impacted by the sudden closure of Pure Prairie Poultry to file a written notice to the Packers & Stockyards Poultry Trust at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s important that the sellers and growers file timely written notice of their claim against Pure Prairie Poultry in order to protect their rights. This might not be the best solution, however, there are strict deadlines set by the federal government and I do not want anyone to miss out on any potential protections that could be provided by the Poultry Trust.”

What should I include in my trust claim?

At a minimum, the written trust claims should include the following information:

  • Live poultry dealer's name and contact information;
  • Your name and contact information;
  • Date of any poultry transaction(s) or poultry growing arrangement(s) for which the live poultry dealer owes you;
  • Amount the live poultry dealer owes you for poultry;
  • Any other information necessary to support your trust claim.

Request written confirmation of receipt for both notices. Keep copies of the notice and receipts to show that you filed your claim in a timely manner.
