State Senate advances measure to let Wisconsin voters decide.

Senator Romaine Quinn Begins New Session With Support For Voter ID

Madison, Wis. – Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Birchwood) today voted to advance voter ID to a statewide referendum for voters to consider in April’s spring election.

“Voter ID is so incredibly important to election security that it should be enshrined in our state constitution,” Quinn said. “A vast majority of Wisconsinites recognize that showing identification to vote is just plain common sense and should be protected from interference by a future legislature, governor, or court who may want to weaken voter ID or disregard the law entirely.”

In order to amend the state constitution, a proposal must pass both houses of the legislature in two subsequent sessions and then be approved in a statewide election. Today’s passage on a 17-15 vote in the State Senate constitutes the second consideration and, if also approved by the State Assembly, the question will be included on the ballot in April’s election to give voters the ultimate decision whether to amend the constitution to add a voter ID requirement to vote in all Wisconsin elections.

“As a State Senator, it is my priority to do everything I can to safeguard the elections process and give voters confidence in our system,” Quinn said. “I don’t understand the opposition from my Democrat colleagues because Voter ID has been used successfully in Wisconsin elections for years and voter participation has only gone up during that time.”

In the 2025-2026 legislative session that began on Monday, Quinn is serving in the second session of his first Senate term that he was elected to in 2022.

In this session Quinn has been appointed to serve as a member on the Joint Committee on Finance, as well as chair of the Senate Committee on Insurance, Housing, Rural Issues and Forestry; and as vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Education.

“I intend to continue to bring a strong voice to the committees I serve on by advocating for our communities, returning surplus tax dollars to the people who pay them, and making government more responsive to the citizens it is supposed to serve.”
