Senator Quinn Reflects On First Year In Office: 'A Look Back And Ahead'

MADISON, WI -- Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) issued the following statement reflecting on his first year in office and looking toward the year ahead:

“As a newly elected Senator who took office last January, I am proud of the accomplishments we’ve made in short time, working on behalf of families in Northwestern Wisconsin. The state budget I voted for funds our community needs; used our state’s record surplus to provide funding for additional health care services, local roads in rural areas, and the largest investment in education in state history; while also ensuring that taxpayers get to keep their hard-earned money.

In particular, the new shared revenue formula will help rural communities keep up with the rising costs of providing law enforcement, fire protection, EMS, transportation, and other basic services. Every community in the 25th Senate District will see at least a 20% increase this year, bringing more than $15 million to local counties and municipalities – without raising any taxes.

As chair of the Senate committee that oversees housing issues, I worked to address Wisconsin’s significant housing shortage that is taking a toll on our economy and causing rising construction and home costs. Legislation signed into law last summer will help attract private investment to create more housing while making sure investments are made throughout the state, including rural areas.

In addition to the housing package, I authored five other bills that were signed into law, including legislation that will allow seniors on SeniorCare to purchase 100-day supplies of certain prescription drugs, pending federal approval. It’s a common-sense measure that will save seniors multiple trips to the pharmacy, which can mean hours of travel time in our area.

Constituents should know that they can always contact me and that they will be heard. In the first year alone my office has received over 3,000 contacts from constituents, whether to provide assistance, answer questions, or listen to their concerns. In addition, I held numerous listening sessions throughout the district along with Rep. Dave Armstrong, Rep. Chanz Green, and Rep. Angie Sapik. It’s always a pleasure meeting people at listening sessions, events, or when I’m out and about.

I also stay in touch with news and information through my weekly e-update, which constituents can sign up for by contacting my office at sen.quinn@legis.wi.gov or by visiting my website here.

In just a few weeks the Legislature will hear from Governor Evers in his State of the State address. I look forward to hearing in detail the governor’s priorities for the coming year. I was disappointed that the governor vetoed proposals to provide a middle class tax cut, expand the Child Care and Dependent tax credit, and reform Wisconsin’s occupational licensure and welfare programs. There are also other issues to address before the end of the legislative session including consumer data privacy protection, election reforms, and addressing concerns about Wisconsin’s deer herd population. It is my sincere hope that we will reach consensus on some of these major issues, especially when Wisconsin families are struggling with the costs of inflation.

One year in, it has been an honor serving as State Senator. I take this job seriously and I am doing my best to live up to the expectations of the 25th Senate District.”

Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) represents the 25th Senate District, which includes all of Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Barron, and Price Counties, and significant portions of Sawyer County.
