Madison – Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) voted for a package that would help strengthen workforce housing in the state of Wisconsin.
“Talking to local officials in my district, housing is always one of the issues that is brought up,” said Rep. Green. “Unfortunately, solving the workforce housing crisis is not an easy fix in Wisconsin. That is what these bills are aiming to do by increasing workforce housing, which is necessary to attract and retain workers in Wisconsin.”
Wisconsin has lagged behind other states when it comes to housing. While many states have a housing shortage, Wisconsin has built fewer housing units per capita than the U.S. average. The cost of building a new house has increased since 2020. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, single-family construction costs have increased by 36.2%, and multi-family construction costs have increased by 35.2%.
The workforce housing package includes legislation to create next-generation workforce housing, rehabilitate main street housing, upgrade aging housing, convert vacant commercial developments to residential, and increase the low-income housing tax credit from $42 million to $100 million.
“These bills are a step in the right direction for Wisconsin,” said Rep. Green. “Achieving homeownership is a dream for everyone, and these bills will make it easier for the citizens of Wisconsin to achieve that dream.”
