Rep. Green: Gov. Evers Doesn’t Represent Northern Wisconsin Hunters

MADISON, WI -- Representative Chanz Green (R-Grand View) issued the following statement after Governor Evers vetoed Senate Bill 139, Assembly Bill 512, and Assembly Bill 1030 last Friday:

“Governor Evers preaches that he wants to represent all Wisconsinites. But with these latest vetoes, he made one thing pretty clear: he doesn’t represent Northern Wisconsin hunters. The three bills would have repealed outdated DNR regulations, better managed our wolf population, and protected our deer herd.

On SB 139, it was a pretty straightforward bill. It would just make the DNR implement a population goal into their wolf management plan. This bill wouldn’t have changed the existing framework concerning the wolf harvest season. I also find it ironic that the governor states that he wants expertise and agreement from scientists, farmers, and hunters on the wolf management plan. But every hunter and farmer I talk to up in Northern Wisconsin agrees that the plan should have a specific population goal.

On AB 512, this law only affects people up in Northern Wisconsin. Why? To me, these rules are hypocritical of how we manage wildlife and hunting dogs in Wisconsin. If a dog runs off below the Northern Restricted Zone for any free-roaming animal, that isn’t an issue, but if it runs off above the Northern Restricted Zone, then it is an issue. It makes no sense.

On AB 1030, the point of this bill was to just protect our deer herd in Northern Wisconsin and implement a better deer management plan for up north. The deer have everything going against them up north because of the abundance of predators, harsh winters, and lack of food sources. I wanted, with other Northern Wisconsin legislators, to be proactive in trying to solve the deer population up north. But this veto is a huge setback considering that hunters up north don’t trust the DNR or CDACs to fix the population.

Governor Evers vetoing all three of these bills sends a pretty clear message: screw all the Northern Wisconsin hunters and listen to the DNR; they know best. I will not stand for that, and I will keep fighting to make sure that the voices of hunters are not washed away in the bureaucracy of Madison politics.”
