Madison, Wis. – Senator Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) voted in favor of four proposals Tuesday to deliver significant tax relief to middle class families and seniors in Wisconsin.
Quinn is the author of legislation to expand the child and dependent care tax credit to return more money to parents and make child care more affordable for Wisconsin families.
“Child care is a huge expense and barrier to working families,” Quinn said. “With this legislation it is my aim to address rising costs by expanding an underutilized credit to put more money into the pockets of Wisconsin families.”
Under the bill, the child and dependent care tax credit would be expanded to 100% of the federal credit and would increase the maximum amount of allowable expenses to $10,000 for one child or $20,000 for two or more children.
Quinn also supported legislation to cut taxes for the middle class by increasing the upper income threshold for the second tax bracket, expanding the married couple credit, and exempting up to $150,000 in retirement income per couple. The combined effect of these proposals will provide an average decrease of $577 in tax liability for a tax filer making $75,000.
“Whether you’re a senior on a fixed income or a working family with kids, you should keep more of what you’ve earned,” Quinn said. “With a record surplus in state funds, it is essential to return funds to taxpayers now – especially at a time of rising costs in everything from food, basic goods, or child care.”
The child and dependent tax credit legislation passed the State Senate on a bipartisan vote of 29-3 after having passed the State Assembly last week. All four bills will now head to the desk of Governor Evers to be signed or vetoed.
“I do not know why Governor Evers continues to veto tax relief proposals that aim to return surplus funds to taxpayers,” Quinn said. “I am optimistic that this time he will finally do the right thing for seniors and middle-income wage earners in Northern Wisconsin and throughout the state.”
Romaine Robert Quinn (R-Cameron) represents the 25th Senate District, which includes all of Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Barron, and Price Counties, and significant portions of Sawyer County
