When it comes to the state of the economy, seniors like Pat Jungbluth of Mineral Point aren’t buying the Biden administration’s assertion that the economy is strong and improving.
“Seniors are forgotten. Medicare doesn’t cover everything, and those of us living on fixed incomes who have worked all our lives don’t seem to matter”, Jungbluth said.
Jungbluth was one of 100 fortunate customers to pick up a $60 gift card from Americans for Prosperity for stopping into Piggly Wiggly stores in Dodgeville and Lancaster recently. Though she wasn’t expecting it, Jungbluth said it was a welcome surprise to help with her weekly groceries, which she admits has become stressful with rising costs.
As part of its ongoing ‘Prosperity is Possible’ tour, Americans for Prosperity partnered with the stores on inflation relief events in both locations to hear from community members on how inflation is affecting them. Jungbluth said, like many Americans, she feels frustrated seeing the media report that the economy is strong and improving and was grateful to see Americans for Prosperity out connecting with folks at the ground level.
Roxann Stillman of Fort Atkinson told Americans for Prosperity her story of surviving extreme poverty through the economic downturn over the past several years as a two-time cancer survivor. She oversees care for her eighty-year-old brother and had to return to the workforce when rising costs made it impossible to live on a fixed income.
“I haven’t been able to make the necessary improvements to my home which put me in a position where I had to create a makeshift shower outside of my house. I haven’t been able to save what I need to fix it. There's just not enough money to cover everything,” she said.
While meeting folks during the Lancaster Piggly Wiggly event Americans for Prosperity staff greeted staff and residents from the Upland Point group home which houses special needs adults. The residents were excited at the opportunity to choose $60 worth of their own food.
Facility manager Acasia Anderson shared that the residents are all on fixed incomes and most only receive $40/month in assistance, less than the value of the gift cards they received from Americans for Prosperity.
Staff member Connie Tosi was visibly emotional while helping each resident get their gift card.
“It’s just been so frustrating to see those who are already struggling get buried under all of this with inflation getting so out of hand and forgotten about like they don’t matter.”
Brianna Hagen of Muscoda, an accountant and small business owner, stopped by our table at the Dodgeville Piggly Wiggly. Brianna was eager to engage with us about economic issues and her experience helping clients from all walks of life to manage their finances. She expressed concern over a divided America and excitement over the work Americans for Prosperity is doing in engaging with everyday citizens, helping people remember their voices matter.
