Prison Ordered For Man Convicted In Barron Sex Sting Case

BARRON COUNTY — The Court has ordered prison time for a 60-year-old MN man, Kevin Rust, who was convicted of seeking a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old.

On July 6, 2018, DrydenWire.com reported that a Minnetonka, MN man was facing criminal charges after the successful execution of a sex sting by the Rice Lake Police Department.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Barron County Circuit Court, Kevin Rust, of MN, responded to an advertisement that had been posted by an undercover Rice Lake Police Department Officer as part of a sex sting. The advertisement was titled titled “younger lady looking for older”.

The undercover police officer presented as a 15-year-old female, and Rust sent messages clearly indicating his desire for a sexual encounter with the female he believed he was communicating with.

On June 28, 2018, Rust travelled from Minnesota to Rice Lake, WI and went to the parking lot of the Cedar Mall, where he believed he was going to be meeting the 15 year old female. Officers were on site, and placed Rust under arrest.

Charges of Class C Felony Use a Computer to Facilitate a Child Sex Crime, Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact, and Class C Felony Attempt Sexual Assault of a Child under 16 years of Age were filed against Rust.



At a recent hearing, the Court ordered prison for Rust on his convictions of Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact, and Class C Felony Attempt Sexual Assault of a Child under 16 years of Age. The charge of Class C Felony Use a Computer to Facilitate a Child Sex Crime was dismissed but read in.

The Court ordered a 10 year sentence on Rust’s conviction of Class C Felony Attempt Sexual Assault of a Child under 16 years of Age, with 3 years of initial confinement in State Prison. On his conviction of Class D Felony Child Enticement-Sexual Contact, the Court ordered a 6 year sentence with 3 years of initial confinement.

Rust is to serve his sentences concurrently. Conditions of his extended supervision will require him to complete any and all evaluations, counseling, treatment and follow-up recommended by Probation Agent. Rust is also prohibited from any unsupervised contact with minor females under the age of 18 and he must not access any dating or personal encounter websites or create any accounts for the purpose of matchmaking or dating encounters with adults or minors.
