One Injured In Barron County Crash; Driver Arrested For OWI 4th Offense

HAUGEN, BARRON COUNTY - On Sunday, May 28, 2023, at approximately 5:02 PM, the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a one-vehicle crash on CTH V near 23rd Street in Barron County.

Assisting agencies, including the Barron County Sheriff’s Department, Marshfield Medical Center Ambulance, and Rice Lake Fire Department, were also present at the scene to provide necessary support.

The crash involved one injury, and the Wisconsin State Patrol is currently investigating the incident to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the collision.

According to preliminary evidence gathered from the crash scene, it appears that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on County Highway V when it veered off the roadway and struck the end of the bridge. Subsequently, the vehicle came to rest in the right ditch.

During the course of the crash investigation, officers from the Wisconsin State Patrol observed signs of impairment exhibited by the driver, identified as Matthew O'Donnell, a 37-year-old male from Cornell, WI. As a result, a subsequent investigation was initiated. O'Donnell was subsequently arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, marking his fourth offense.

The driver sustained serious injuries in the crash. In order to receive immediate medical attention, O'Donnell was airlifted to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire. His injuries have been classified as life-threatening.

The Wisconsin State Patrol continues to actively investigate the crash.
