SAWYER COUNTY (DrydenWire) - Criminal charges have been filed against a Minnesota man for the 2021 Stone Lake area fatal shooting of Cary Lynn Elkin. Now, the newly filed criminal complaint in Sawyer County Circuit Court reveals more information regarding Cary Lynn Elkin’s homicide.

Law enforcement’s investigation progressed over the months following the homicide with the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office receiving assistance from Wisconsin’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin’s State Crime Lab, and several Minnesota law enforcement agencies.

In May of 2022, Sawyer County Sheriff Mrotek released the name of the suspect for the homicide, Manly M. McDermott, of Bemidji, MN.

Online court records show that criminal charges including 1st Degree Intentional Homicide and Felon Possessing Firearm were filed with a warrant for McDermott’s arrest. McDermott is in the custody of the Moose Lake Minnesota Correctional Facility serving a sentence for convictions on firearms charges.
