Biden And McCarthy Sound Optimistic On Debt Ceiling Deal After Meeting, But 'Differences' Remain

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy left a White House meeting with President Joe Biden on Monday saying he was optimistic about progress toward a deal on the nation's debt ceiling -- but "philosophical differences" with Democrats remained, as the clock continues to tick down toward an unprecedented default.

"I think the tone tonight was better than any other time," McCarthy said. "We still will have some philosophical differences, but I felt it was productive in that manner."

"We don't have an agreement yet, but I did feel the discussion was productive in areas that we have differences of opinion," he said.

Negotiators for the president and the speaker will keep working toward a deal, McCarthy said, and he expects he'll speak with Biden daily.

How Biden Got To Yes On F-16s And Ukraine

For more than a year, Kyiv has asked for modern fighter jets, and the Biden administration’s answer has either been “no,” or “not right now.”

That changed late last week, when President Joe Biden told allies that he would support an international coalition to train Ukrainian pilots on Western fighters, paving the way for modern jets to one day be transferred to the front line.

A key turning point came in the last few weeks, when the West finished delivering the vast majority of equipment Ukraine needed for a planned spring counteroffensive. The coalition of countries supporting Ukraine has shuttled tons of heavy weaponry, including sophisticated air defense systems and armored vehicles, to the battlefield to help Kyiv repel Russian forces.

State Lawmakers Unveil Package Of Bills Aimed At Addressing Wisconsin's Housing Shortage

A bipartisan group of state lawmakers recently introduced a package of bills aimed at addressing Wisconsin’s affordable housing crisis.

Supporters of the legislation say the bills will target high construction costs through low- to zero-interest loans for certain housing projects, as well as make it easier for local governments to approve housing developments. The bills have received support from real estate, building groups, local government associations and public health associations.

"Nothing is the be-all and end-all or the perfect answer, but these address some very specific challenges and allow housing to move forward that otherwise wouldn't," said Jerry Deschane, executive director of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities. "It's not going to be the same in every community, but we think these different bills address very specific problems."

Johnson On ‘UpFront’ Calls Debt Limit Deadline ‘Phony Crisis,’ Baldwin Says ‘We Cannot Default’

Wisconsin GOP U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson called the debt limit deadline “a phony crisis” while Dem Sen. Tammy Baldwin said, “We cannot default.”

“I’ve called this a phony crisis, and it is,” Johnson said on “UpFront,” which is produced in partnership with WisPolitics. “If you had a responsible treasury secretary, a responsible president, they would take default off the table.”

Johnson said he’s unsure whether he would vote for a compromise package negotiated between Republican leaders and the White House. He brushed off concerns of default, saying, “We have more than enough money to talk about any kind of default, so let’s stop talking about it.”

“A clean bill’s not going to happen,” Johnson said. “I would support the House bill right now. That was my guarantee to House conservatives.”
