Your Silicon Valley Bank Fallout Questions, Answered

A bank run on Silicon Valley Bank led the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to take control of the bank Friday in the second-largest bank failure in US history.

The FDIC insures depositors up to $250,000, but as many larger companies used SVB as their bank, they had a lot more than that in their accounts. US customers held at least $151.5 billion in uninsured deposits by the end of 2022, SVB’s latest annual report said. Foreign deposits reached at least $13.9 billion and are also uninsured.

But before markets opened this week, the Biden administration took an extraordinary step, guaranteeing that SVB customers will have access to all their money starting Monday, even uninsured deposits.

Trump Returns To Iowa, With A Plan To Avoid The Missteps He Made In 2016

After he lost the 2016 Iowa Republican caucus, Donald Trump delivered a speech in which he pledged his love for the state and suggested he might even buy a farm there.

On Monday, the former president returned, not to visit a farm he didn’t end up purchasing but to try and win over the critical voters who, he hopes, will send him on his way back to the White House.

Trump spent the evening in the eastern part of Iowa, which traditionally hosts the GOP’s first-in-the-nation caucuses. After a stop at a restaurant where he snapped photos with customers, he talked up his prospects of winning the state that eluded him seven years ago.

Lawmakers Target Child Labor Laws To Ease Worker Shortage

Legislators in multiple states are invoking a widespread labor shortage to push bills that would weaken long-standing child labor laws.

Some bills go beyond expanding eligibility or working hours for run-of-the-mill teen jobs. They'd make it easier for kids to fill physically demanding roles at potentially hazardous work sites. Protections could be stripped for youth most at risk of being exploited by employers, like migrant children and kids from families facing financial problems.

A new Arkansas law signed by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) last week makes it easier for teens as young as 14 to work without obtaining a permit.

Pope Francis Says Catholic Church Banning Priests From Engaging In Sex Is 'Temporary'

Pope Francis said the Catholic Church's thousand-year-old practice of celibacy could be changed.

In a recent interview with an Argentine publication Infobae, Francis said the ban on priests having sex was only "temporary" and that there is "no contradiction for a priest to marry."

"There is no contradiction for a priest to marry. Celibacy in the western Church is a temporary prescription," Francis said. "It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever whether you like it or not. On the other hand, celibacy is a discipline."

The Catholic Church began requiring celibacy in the 11th century because clergy with no children were more likely to leave their money to the church.

GOP Oversight Chairman Subpoenas Hunter Biden Associates’ Bank Records

House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has issued a subpoena for the bank records belonging to associates of Hunter Biden.

The news was first disclosed in a letter that Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking member of the Oversight committee, sent to Comer expressing concerns about the panel’s investigation into presidential ethics.

In that letter, Raskin referenced “the sweeping subpoena you recently issued relating to business associates of President Biden’s son,” which he said Democrats were given with “mere hours of notice.” Raskin said this was a break from “longstanding committee practice” of giving the committee’s minority a minimum of 48 hours notice for subpoenas.

“With 2024 looming, democracy in Wisconsin remains in peril. But at the same time, a historic opportunity to improve life for Wisconsinites may be within reach,” said Wikler, who was unopposed in his 2021 reelection bid.

VP Harris Singles Out Wisconsin Abortion Ban In Push For Abortion Access Nationwide

Abortion access has been a big focus for the Biden Administration since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last summer.

On a call with reporters Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris singled out several states for abortion restrictions that have been enacted since then.

"This fight will be won only when we secure reproductive rights for every person in every state," Harris said.

She denounced a proposed six-week abortion ban in Florida. She brought up a lawsuit five women have filed against Texas because of that state's abortion ban. And she singled out Wisconsin's near-total abortion ban, which has been on the books since 1849.

2004 Wisconsin State Quarters Could Be Worth Up To $6K: Here’s Why

Wisconsin state quarters from the 50 State Quarters Program feature a limited-edition design that grows in value if there’s a detectable difference in that design, according to coin collectors.

The front of the coin displays a cow, a peeled husk of corn and a sliced wheel of cheese along with inscriptions that name the state, the year Wisconsin was admitted into the union (1848) and the word "Forward," which is Wisconsin’s state motto./p>

However, some of the Wisconsin quarters that were released in 2004 have a small design difference that shows an extra leaf on the illustrated corn husk.
