McCarthy Heads To Grueling Speaker Vote With Fate In Limbo

As Kevin McCarthy begins the final descent of his turbulent bid for the speaker’s gavel, Republicans are bracing to see whether he lands the plane or crashes and burns.

After weeks of intense, down-to-the-wire negotiations, the California Republican is about out of time to lock down the needed 218 votes. With his yearslong effort to claim the speakership trapped in limbo, he’ll first meet with his party’s conference Tuesday morning behind closed doors, likely making his final case before members head to the House floor to vote.

Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin In 'Critical Condition' After Collapsing On Field

Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin had his heartbeat restored on the field after suffering cardiac arrest during the team's game Monday night against the Bengals, and he is currently in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital, the Bills said in a statement early Tuesday morning.

The chilling scene midway through the opening quarter of the Monday night showdown between the two NFL powers led the league to postpone the game about 90 minutes after kickoff.

CPR was administered to Hamlin, 24, on the field for multiple minutes after he collapsed following his tackle of Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

How Biden Could Appoint More Judges Than Trump

Democrats now have a slightly bigger Senate majority but not much to do with it. And so, it’s time for more judges.

Retaining the Senate means that President Biden and Senate Democrats will be able to continue nominating and confirming federal judges, and, if they play their cards right over the next two years, Democrats may get as many judges on the federal bench as Republicans did during former President Donald Trump’s term. If they get lucky, they could end up with even more.

Trump Tax Returns Raise Alarms About Fairness Of US Tax Code

A preliminary review of the thousands of pages of Donald Trump’s tax returns released by a key congressional committee on Friday confirms that the former president was using business losses in the tens of millions of dollars to reduce his annual tax liability, in some cases all the way down to zero.

While one of Trump’s main businesses was found guilty of criminal tax fraud earlier this month, Trump himself has so far not been accused of doing anything illegal with his taxes and personal accounting.

But that’s raising more urgent questions about the fairness of the U.S. tax code and tax regulations, which number in the millions of words and in the case of Trump proved effectively unenforceable.

Gov. Tony Evers Is Starting His Second Term, But Nearly 180 Of His Appointees Remain Unconfirmed

Gov. Tony Evers starts his second term on Jan. 3, but scores of holdovers from the Democratic governor's first term are stuck in a kind of legislative limbo.

Nearly 180 people appointed by Evers to lead state agencies, boards and commissions had yet to be confirmed by the state Senate, according to lists provided in mid-December by the governor's office and the nonpartisan Legislative Reference Bureau.

That includes five Cabinet members who continue to lead state agencies despite having never been confirmed by the Senate. While they have all the duties of other cabinet secretaries, they're technically secretary-designees, which means they can be fired by the Senate.

Evers Seeks 'Significant Increase' For UW System In Wisconsin's Next State Budget

For most Wisconsinites, ringing in the new year meant making resolutions and enjoying a break from school or work. But for Gov. Tony Evers, 2023 ushered in Wisconsin’s hectic biennial state budget process.

The state budget cycle resets every two years, beginning in an even year and ending in an odd year. The governor’s office will present an executive draft budget in February based on funding requests from state agencies submitted last fall.

Evers recently shared some of his plans for the upcoming budget with The Daily Cardinal. His primary spending goals included renovating college campuses, offering more adequate mental health care, lowering tuition costs and attempting to close the K-12 achievement gap.

Wisconsin ranked 41st in the nation for total revenues going to higher education — the lowest ranking of any Midwestern state.

Before Christmas, the Republican speaker met with the Democratic governor. It was the first time in two years that the two met in person.

"I think we’re going to try to reach common ground when we can," said Governor Tony Evers.
