Biden Scolds 'MAGA Republicans' After 5th Circuit Court Strikes Down DACA, Orders No New Applicants

President Biden lashed out at a federal appeals court on Wednesday, after it ruled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was illegally implemented by the Obama administration.

In a statement, the president called the decision "unlawful" and urged Congress to make permanent legislative protections to help more than 600,000 immigrants currently protected by DACA.

On Wednesday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court’s three-judge panel determined the Obama administration lacked the authority to institute the DACA program. However, the court stopped short of judicially dismantling it and said DACA migrants could continue to receive legal protections.

Mexico Mayor Assassinated In Town Hall Massacre

Gunmen have shot dead the mayor of a small town in western Mexico, and at least 17 others, officials say.

Police say gunmen stormed the San Miguel Totolapan town hall at 14:00 (19:00 GMT) on Wednesday. Photos online show it riddled with bullet holes.

The attack has been blamed on the Los Tequileros criminal gang, which is linked to a powerful drug cartel.

Police officers and council workers were also killed in the massacre, with graphic images of bloodied bodies lying on the ground circulating on social media.

In Key Battlegrounds, GOP Onslaught Of Crime Ads Tightens Senate Races

Republicans have unleashed a barrage of negative ads in the final weeks of the midterms that hammer Democrats on crime.

In at least two states, the strategy appears to be taking hold.

Recent polling suggests that after GOP Senate candidates zeroed in on crime in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the trajectory of the races shifted. In Wisconsin in particular, the negative ads have relentlessly targeted Democratic Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, who is challenging Sen. Ron Johnson.

“They’ve all got the same crib notes: Attack Democrats on crime,” said political science professor Charles Franklin, the director of the Marquette University Law School poll.

Abortion Policy Reversal By Michels Underscores Differences Among Wisconsin Republicans On Exceptions

Republican Tim Michels was talking to a roomful of party activists in early September when he fielded a question about his position on abortion. Michels vowed he would never change, and said he was "winning" his race against Democratic Gov. Tim Evers precisely because people saw him as "a man of conviction, a man who doesn't waffle."

Two weeks later, Michels retreated from his unqualified support for Wisconsin's 1849 law banning abortion except to save the life of the mother, saying if elected he would sign legislation to grant exceptions for rape and incest.

Dems Knock GOP Over Abortion As Lawmakers Adjourn Special Session On Ballot Initiatives

Five weeks out from the election, Wisconsin Dems sought to place a spotlight on abortion as Gov. Tony Evers told a Capitol rally he and Dem AG Josh Kaul have been a “brick wall” against GOP efforts to restrict access to the procedure.

Evers addressed a rally on the Capitol steps shortly after GOP legislative leaders on Tuesday quickly gaveled in and out of a special session the guv called seeking to give voters a pathway to overturning the state’s 1849 abortion ban, which only allows an exception to save the life of a mother.

“I believe people deserve a voice since they’ve been failed by the Republicans in this building time and time again,” Evers said. “We should give the people an opportunity to vote on these important issues.”
